Aitoff Projection
Elliptical Compromise
David Aitoff's 1889 compromise — a stretched azimuthal equidistant projection. The world fits in an ellipse 2:1 wide to tall. It's not equal-area, not conformal, but it looks good and distorts neither area nor shape severely. Hammer later made it equal-area; the two are often confused.
