Kavrayskiy VII Projection

Soviet Compromise

Developed by Vladimir Kavrayskiy in 1939 for Soviet atlas production. A pseudocylindrical compromise with less shape distortion at the poles than Mercator-family projections. Popular in Russian and Eastern European cartography, and quietly beautiful.
