Robinson Projection

Empirical Pseudocylindrical

Created by Arthur Robinson in 1963 for Rand McNally, and used by National Geographic from 1988 to 1998. It's defined by a lookup table rather than a formula — Robinson simply drew what looked right and reverse-engineered the maths. Nothing is preserved perfectly, but it's widely beloved.
