Van der Grinten Projection

Circular Compromise

Alphons van der Grinten's 1904 projection packs the world into a circle. Not equal-area, not conformal — a purely aesthetic construction. National Geographic used it as their standard world map from 1922 to 1988. Greenland and Antarctica are inflated, but the circular boundary is undeniably striking.
